A 4 year funded integrated PhD and MSc in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

The Centre for Doctoral Training in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine – Innovation in Medical and Biological Engineering is providing postgraduate research and training for 50 students, to research, develop and deliver regenerative therapies and devices, which can repair or replace diseased tissues and restore normal tissue function.

The programme includes an integrated MSc in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine which comprises of compulsory and optional taught modules over the first two years with the majority studied in year 1, allowing a phased increase to full time research towards the end of year 2.

Structure

The CDT TERM iMBE comprise of a blended programme of specialised subject modules, along with professional development and skills training, integrated with research over two years. These form an integrated MSc in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.You will study 180 taught credits over the two years with the majority studied in year 1, allowing a phased increase to full time research towards the end of year 2.In year one, you will take 120 credits of compulsory and optional subject specific modules, alongside a Training & Professional Development Planning (TPDP) module. Compulsory modules include choice in most cases, allowing you to create specific programmes according to your individual needs.

Compulsory modules include:
– Cross-disciplinary Laboratory Placements, which allow students to experience a variety of different academic research environments
– Systematic Review which introduces students to the literature early in year
– Research Methods and a new Perspectives on Innovation, the latter part of this module will be delivered by the Business School, and will introduce you to the concepts of IP, clinical trials and health economics.

Research activity will encompass poster and oral presentations, peer to peer training, research group involvement and research within programme activity e.g. industry workshop; project workshops; annual networking conferences.

In order to enhance student research performance, employability, professionalism and engagement with society, all students will follow a tailored TPDP and compile a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) in years one and two.

Optional modules will be chosen from a list and delivered across the different faculties involved in the programme. These include training in the life sciences (Immunology, Microbiology, Tissue Engineering, Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering), chemistry (Nanotoxicology, Bionanotechnology, Self Assembling Nanostructures) and engineering (Biomaterials, Biotribology, Functional Joint Replacement).

Project choices and subject specific training – In line with our ethos of student choice, you will not be pre-assigned to research projects on enrolment into the programme. You will be encouraged to undertake subject specific training through both laboratory placements and taught modules before you choose a project. Project choices will be made at the end of semester 2 in year 1. Research will commence in Semester 3 of year 1 and initially comprise a full literature review, induction and training in research laboratories before experimental and/or computational research commences.

In year 2 of the programme, as part of the MSc, you will continue with professional development activities and have the opportunity to undertake an external/international placement for approximately three weeks. In addition, innovation training will continue with Perspectives on Innovation 2, which provides training in processes, open innovation and commercialising University research. You will also choose a total of 15 credits of subject specific optional modules to support your research projects. Thus the integrated MSc will support learning and reinforce knowledge required for carrying out the research project. In addition skills such as scientific writing, project management, communication etc will be developed through the MSc.

In years 3 & 4 the emphasis will be on the research project; however, you will continue with professional development throughout the programme. Innovation training will continue with mini-placements in industry covering aspects such as project management, quality systems, creativity, regulation, IP management, KT, innovation networks, product design and health economics.

Entry Requirements

Places are available for students who have their own funding - Entry requirements for the programme is a degree equivalent to a UK upper second class honours (2:1), or higher, in a engineering or a physical science. To date the EPSRC have funded 50 full standard studentship consists of academic fees, together with a maintenance grant

English language requirements - If English is not your first language, you’ll need a recognised English Language qualification. For example, IELTS: 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in any component.

– Please select ‘Integrated PhD Tissue Engineering’. Use this option for both Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and Innovation in Medical & Biological Engineering programmes.
– Please enter ‘CDT TERM iMBE’ in the ‘Research Area’ section. You may include a research proposal if you have a specific project you wish to follow, however this is not required at this stage.
– Please include a CV and transcripts of your first degree.

– Personal statement and covering letter.
